She was all he ever wanted and nothing he could ever have.
Fiona Anderton, the Countess of Aethelred and Rose Tumbler, the Duchess of Deighton are the best of friends. The Duchess' daughter, Lady Hazel, is finishing her studies in Bath, while the Countess' oldest son, Lord Edgar, is back from his voyages. The two mothers want to arrange a marriage between their children, who haven't met each other for years. The Countess insists that Edgar has to start writing to Hazel, so they get to know each other before they meet.
However, Edgar doesn't fell comfortable neither with writing letters, nor with the whole marriage thing. He knows that being the heir means that he has to find a bride, but love is not in his mind yet. He wants to travel the world. On the other hand, Edgar's youngest brother, Kendrick is a sensitive soul, a poet himself, who dreams of a loving marriage. He also knows better Hazel, as they have been good friends though their childhood. Kendrick is asked by his brother to write those letters to Hazel, signing with Edgar's name.
Kendrick cannot but help his brother. He exchanges letters with Hazel, pretending to be Edgar. Through these letters Kendrick falls in love with his charming and smart childhood friend and his heart fills with regret.
Hazel also falls for the intellectual young man, the writer of the poetic letters. But when she meets him, he seems different. Trying to find out what changed in him, she will face a scary truth. The man she is to marry is not the one she loves. The friend she used to trust is more than she thought.
